RODMAN GUN (Verlinden)

This is a 1/35 scale resin kit from Verlinden. Rodman guns were used by the US forces during the US civil war in the early 1860s as emplaced coastal artillery able to sink ships at a great distance. They were the first hollow-cast guns, and therefore stronger and capable of larger explosive charges. There is a fine example of a real Rodman gun on Governor's Island in New York City.

It was the first resin kit I have built. Every part is resin. Even the wood is resin. I painted it field tan, then weathered the wood with sooty powder. Epoxy cement was used to simulate water in the bucket which also has a rope handle. The gun carriage is gently weathered with rust powder.
The gun and metal carriage are all resin and painted with an indoor-outdoor patio furniture paint bomb, then flattened a lot and rusted with paints and pigments. The wooden beams are also resin and were spray painted with Tamiya's nazi desert tan, then rubbed with soot pigment. The wood effect was so successful that it fooled ship modellers. It has won two prizes and was sold to an art collector as a present for his wife.
